Mathematics are not an opinion

From yesterday until December 9, held in Durban (South Africa), the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Maybe it's a good time to recall some facts about the alarming situation.

1 - Today there is no doubt about the average temperature has risen and all the predictions based on computer models say it will continue. The only question that is often used by climate skeptics, is knowing the rate of warming.

2 - The human contribution to global greenhouse gas is not in doubt, and recent studies we quantified very precisely.

3 - The Kyoto Protocol, which was approved in 1997 and took effect in 2005, aims to the "stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system." As of September 2011, 191 states have signed and ratified the protocol. The only remaining signatory not to have ratified the protocol is the United States.

4 - The current Kyoto Protocol limits emissions to mark the end of 2012. The main objective of the Cop17 is to decide the limits are in effect from 2013.

It is too early to know whether we have done later in the fight against climate change. Every missed opportunity is an obstacle in the way of leaving our children a planet in good condition. It is therefore important that these days is discussed in Durban, and affects us all.
